Field note 01 · Production migration

Changing the base URL is the easy part.

30-minute benchmark A production-minded checklist for moving Dify, RAG, or an AI agent to an OpenAI-compatible API—without confusing a 200 response with a safe migration.

Replacing an API key and base URL proves connectivity. It does not prove that streaming, tool calls, retries, error handling, or your actual cost model will survive production traffic.

Start with 20 real tasks

Do not benchmark twenty variations of “hello.” Pull representative work from the product and write down what a passing result looks like before you run anything.

ShortClassification, extraction, rewriting, formatting.
Context-heavyLong-document summarization and RAG answers.
StructuredStrict JSON output and tool-call arguments.

Hold the conditions still

Use the same inputs, concurrency, timeout, retry cap, temperature, and acceptance criteria for every model or route. Otherwise the comparison is measuring your test setup rather than the provider.

concurrency: 2–5
timeout: 60 seconds
max_retries: 2
runs: at least 3
acceptance: fixed before testing

Record six signals

Business successDid the result pass the real acceptance rule?
Time to first tokenStreaming can feel slow even when total time looks fine.
Total latency and P95Averages hide the tail your users actually notice.
Input and output tokensKeep the two price dimensions separate.
429s, timeouts, and retriesRetries can quietly multiply both latency and spend.
One workflow IDJoin planning, tools, retries, and synthesis into one trace.

Price the successful workflow

An agent may plan, search, call a tool, validate a result, retry, and summarize after one visible user click. Headline token price is therefore only one line in the bill.

cost per successful workflow =
(model + retry + tool cost) ÷ successful workflows

A route that spends $14 but completes only 55 tasks can be more expensive than one that spends $18 and completes 82. Optimize for usable outcomes, not cheap attempts.

Test the edges your app uses

  • Streaming chunks, finish reasons, and disconnect behavior
  • JSON output and schema adherence
  • Function calling, tool arguments, and parallel tool calls
  • Model-name mappings and unsupported parameters
  • 401, 429, timeout, and upstream error objects
  • SDK auto-retry behavior and retry-cost amplification

A successful cURL request does not prove that the Python SDK, Node.js SDK, or a Dify node will consume the response correctly.

Then run 3–7 days of low-risk traffic

The 30-minute check removes obvious failures. Before moving core traffic, route a non-critical workflow for several days and compare success rate, P95, retry rate, and cost per successful workflow every day.

Use your own numbers.

The free calculator turns attempted tasks, successful tasks, retries, and total cost into a workflow-level comparison. The repository also includes minimal Python and Node.js examples.

Disclosure: This guide was prepared by the WoofAPI team. WoofAPI provides OpenAI-compatible multi-model routes for Dify, RAG, and AI agent testing. Selected GPT routes can be up to about 95% lower in specific official input-price comparisons. Pricing varies by model, input/output billing, and live route; verify the pricing page and benchmark your own workload. Website: woofapi.com · API base URL: https://api.woofapi.com/v1
